What Is Conversion Rate Optimization?
Conversion rate optimization is the work of turning the visitors you already have into calls, forms and sales. It uses heatmaps, recordings and tests on the pages you already rank with, so the gain comes from fixing what loses people rather than buying more traffic.
Why Your SEO Traffic Is Not Turning Into Calls
SEO conversion optimization finds the reasons search visitors leave your website without contacting you, then fixes them. The work covers landing page layout, offers, forms, load speed, and mobile usability.
Most sites convert between 2% and 5% of visitors, so improving the pages your rankings already feed can double your leads with no extra ad spend.
Most business owners think they have a traffic problem. If you already rank, you have a conversion problem.
Say 1,000 people find you in Google this month and 20 of them contact you. You do not need 2,000 visitors.
You need to know what the other 980 saw that made them leave. That is the entire job, and it is usually cheaper to fix than it is to double your rankings.

How Conversion Optimization Works on an SEO Site
There is no guessing step. The process runs in the same order every time.
- Set up real tracking. Before anything changes, we confirm calls, forms, and goals are recorded correctly and attributed to organic search. Broken tracking is the most common problem we find, and it makes every other number meaningless.
- Find the leaks. Heatmaps, scroll depth, session recordings, and landing page reports show which pages lose search visitors and where on the page they quit.
- Fix the obvious problems first. Slow pages, forms with too many fields, buried phone numbers, and weak offers get handled before any testing starts.
- Test the rest. Headlines, button text, page order, and offers get tested against the current version so the winner is decided by data.
- Report on conversions. You get numbers on leads and sales next to your rankings, not instead of them.
Steps 1 through 3 produce the biggest lift. Testing is where the last stretch of improvement comes from, and it needs traffic to work.
What Costs You Conversions on Organic Landing Pages
The same problems show up on most sites we review:
- Service pages written for Google that never answer what the visitor actually asked
- Contact forms asking for seven fields when three would do
- No phone number visible above the fold on mobile
- Pages that take more than four seconds to load on a phone
- No pricing anywhere, which sends price shoppers straight back to the results
- City pages that rank but read like every other city page on the site
Fixing the visible ones costs nothing but the work. That is why proper conversion rate optimization services start with an audit rather than a testing tool subscription.
Most of them are found the same way we found yours, by watching where visitors stop, which our walkthrough on optimizing a site for conversions covers step by step.

CRO vs SEO: How They Work Together
Ranking and converting are two different jobs, and doing one without the other wastes money.
SEO grows the top of the funnel by bringing more visitors in. CRO grows the bottom by turning more of them into customers.
A page in position 3 that converts nobody is worth less than a page in position 8 converting 6% of its visitors, which is why reporting on rank alone hides the real problem.
They also feed each other, and the same work lowers your cost per lead on every click you buy through Google Ads campaigns. Nothing else in marketing compounds that way.
Does Conversion Work Actually Affect Rankings?
Yes, through three mechanisms Google has confirmed. It does not work the way most articles claim.
Core Web Vitals. Google’s page experience documentation states that beyond Core Web Vitals, other page experience aspects do not directly help a page rank higher. Read that in reverse and it is an admission: Core Web Vitals do.
Loading under 2.5 seconds, interaction response under 200 milliseconds, and layout shift under 0.1 are the same fixes that stop a mobile visitor abandoning your form. One job, two payoffs.
Click signals. Under oath at the 2023 Department of Justice antitrust trial, Google’s VP of Search described Navboost, a system built on 13 months of click data, as one of the company’s most important ranking signals. Internal documents published in 2024 named the fields it reads, including good clicks, bad clicks, and last longest click.
When someone clicks your result and does not come straight back to the results page hunting for a better answer, that registers.
Page experience overall. Google states that its core ranking systems look to reward content providing a good page experience, while cautioning there is no single page experience signal. A page that answers the query and makes the next step obvious is the whole point of a search engine optimization campaign.
What does not work is the version you will read on most CRO pages: that your time on site or bounce rate feeds the algorithm. Google has denied that consistently since 2010, and its own analysts have said plainly they do not use analytics or bounce rate in search ranking.
Google cannot see your Analytics account. What it can see is whether its searchers got what they came for.
“His company designs highly effective campaigns on Google Ads, our numbers grew tremendously in weeks.”

What SEO Conversion Optimization Services Cost
Here is what the work costs.
| Engagement | Typical range | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly retainer | $999 to $4,000 per month | ongoing work on a site with traffic |
| One-time audit | $1,500 to $3,000 | a prioritized fix list your team runs |
| Strategy and consulting | $250 per hour | you want direction, your team executes |
| Implementation | $150 per hour | defined pieces of work |
| Industry comparison | $5,000 to $8,000 per month | what mid-tier agencies publish |
What moves the number:
- Traffic volume. Sites with heavy organic traffic can run real A/B tests, which takes more hours. Low-traffic sites get direct fixes instead, which costs less.
- Number of pages. A five-page service site is a different job from 60 city pages or a 400-product store.
- Platform. WordPress changes are quick. Locked-down custom builds and some hosted carts take longer.
- Whether tracking exists. If conversions were never tracked properly, the first month includes setting that up.
When Conversion Optimization Is Not the Right Move Yet
Most agencies will not tell you this, so here it is.
If your site gets fewer than about 300 visitors a month, formal A/B testing will not work for you. There is not enough data to declare a winner, and any result you get is noise.
At that stage your money does better going into rankings first, or into a one-time audit and direct fixes rather than an ongoing testing retainer.
The same goes for a site with broken analytics. Until conversions are tracked correctly, nobody can tell you whether a change helped.
We will say so rather than sell you a retainer that cannot prove its own value.
Conversion Optimization for eCommerce and Lead Generation Sites
Online stores and service businesses lose search visitors at different points.
eCommerce
Product and category pages carry most of the loss, and those are exactly where organic search lands. Cart abandonment, unclear shipping costs, and forced account creation are the usual culprits.
Fixes concentrate on the checkout path, where visitors with real intent give up.
Lead Generation and Service Businesses
The loss usually happens earlier, on the service page or city page the searcher landed on. Buyers want price ranges, timelines, proof, and an easy way to call.
Giving them a real answer instead of “contact us for a quote” is often the highest-value change on the whole site.
Why Choose SEO Optimizers
Brandon Leibowitz has run SEO Optimizers since 2010 and personally reviews every audit that goes out. He also teaches the SEO and AI search classes the company runs, so the recommendations you get are the same ones he stands in front of a room and defends.
Most CRO agencies do not do SEO, and most SEO agencies stop at rankings. Working with a conversion rate optimization consultant who also owns your search visibility means the landing page and the keyword it ranks for get designed together instead of by two vendors who never talk.
We work from Venice Beach in Los Angeles with clients around the world, and we report on leads and sales rather than vanity metrics. If you want a second opinion first, the free website analysis is a real review, not an automated PDF.
For oversight across marketing rather than one service, fractional CMO services cover this work as part of a wider plan.

How the Options Compare
| What you can change | Typical effect on conversions | Effort |
|---|---|---|
| Page load speed | Large on mobile, compounds with SEO | Technical, one project |
| Form length and fields | Often the single biggest lift | Low, an afternoon |
| Clarity of the offer above the fold | Large, decides whether people read on | Copy, not code |
| Trust signals such as reviews | Moderate but reliable | Low once you have reviews |
| Button color and small styling | Small, usually overstated | Low, test last |

Frequently Asked Questions
The goal is more leads from the same traffic, which makes every other marketing channel more profitable.
What does CRO mean in SEO?
CRO in SEO means conversion rate optimization, the practice of turning more of your organic search visitors into leads or customers. SEO earns the ranking and brings the click.
CRO decides what happens after the click. Together they are measured as one number, revenue per visitor, rather than rankings on their own, which is why most agencies now treat them as a single program.
Does conversion rate optimization help SEO rankings?
Conversion rate optimization does help SEO rankings, though not through time on site. Google has denied using analytics or bounce rate in ranking since 2010.
The real connections are Core Web Vitals, which Google’s own documentation confirms directly affect ranking, and click signals from its Navboost system, described as a top ranking signal in 2023 antitrust testimony. Faster pages and answers that stop searchers returning to Google serve both goals at once.
How much do SEO conversion optimization services cost?
Conversion optimization is priced against traffic volume and the number of pages in scope, because both decide how quickly a test reaches significance. A site with steady organic traffic can be tested properly and pays back faster. Retainers are $999+ a month, a one-time audit runs $1,500 to $3,000, and hourly strategy is $250.
A low-traffic site is better served by fixing the obvious problems first rather than running tests that will never reach a conclusion. Send us the site through a free website analysis.
What is a good website conversion rate?
A good website conversion rate falls between 2% and 5% for most industries, with the global average sitting near 2.35% across all sectors. Anything above 5% is strong and rates above 10% are rare.
Benchmarks vary widely, though. Financial services and high-intent local service businesses convert far higher than general eCommerce, so compare yourself against your own industry.
How long does conversion rate optimization take to work?
Conversion rate optimization takes about 30 to 90 days to show measurable results. Direct fixes such as faster pages, shorter forms, and clearer calls to action can lift conversions within weeks.
A/B tests take longer because each test needs enough visitors to reach a reliable result, usually two to four weeks per test on a site with steady traffic.
What is the difference between SEO and CRO?
The difference between CRO and SEO is what each one improves. SEO brings more visitors to your website by improving rankings in search results.
CRO increases the percentage of those visitors who become customers. SEO grows the top of the funnel, CRO grows the bottom.
Running both together produces more leads than either one does on its own.
How much traffic do you need for conversion rate optimization?
The traffic you need for conversion rate optimization is roughly 300 to 500 visitors per month before formal A/B testing produces trustworthy results. Below that, tests cannot reach statistical significance and the winner is guesswork.
Lower-traffic sites still benefit from a one-time audit and direct fixes to forms, page speed, offers, and calls to action. Save the testing retainer until traffic supports it.

What does a CRO agency do?
A CRO agency finds why visitors leave without acting, then fixes it. The work is research first: analytics, session recordings and heatmaps to see where people drop off, then changes to the pages that lose them, then testing to confirm the change helped.
A good agency will tell you when your traffic is too low to test reliably, and fix the obvious problems instead. See our conversion rate optimization services.
What is the difference between CVR and CTR?
CVR and CTR measure different steps. Click-through rate is the share of people who see something and click it, such as a search result or an ad.
Conversion rate is the share who then do what you wanted, like calling or buying. A page can have a strong CTR and a weak CVR, which usually means the promise in the listing does not match what the page delivers.
