What Is Article Writing?
Article writing and submission means placing written pieces on sites that have real readers, so the link inside sits in content people find. The old directory version stopped working years ago, and Google names that pattern directly in its spam policy.

Article Submission Services: What Happened To Them
Article writing and submission means writing a piece and placing it on another publication that links back to you. The tactic changed completely when Google devalued article directories.
What still works is placement on real sites with their own readers and editorial standards, which is slower, more selective, and far more valuable than bulk submission ever was.
Article submission meant writing an article, then distributing it to hundreds of article directories with a link back to your site. It is still sold today.
It no longer works, and buying it now carries real risk.
Why article submission stopped working
Two Google updates ended it. Panda, in 2011, targeted thin and duplicated content, which is exactly what article directories were built on.
Penguin, in 2012, targeted manipulative link patterns, which is exactly what mass submission produced. Most of the large directories lost their own rankings and many closed.
Google’s link spam policy is explicit today. It names low-quality directory links and article marketing with keyword-rich anchor text as link schemes.
A link that exists only because you placed it there, on a page nobody reads, is the pattern the policy describes.
What you actually get if you buy it in 2026
- Hundreds of links from sites with no readers and no editorial standards
- The same article duplicated across many domains, which is a thin content signal
- Repetitive keyword anchor text, the single most obvious footprint of a paid link campaign
- A link profile you may later have to disavow, which costs more to clean up than it cost to buy
Nobody can guarantee hundreds of backlinks from real sites, because real sites decide for themselves whether to link to you. Any service promising a guaranteed number is describing directories.
What replaced it
The goal has not changed. You still want other sites linking to yours.
What changed is that the link has to be earned from a site with an actual audience.
- Manual outreach. A researched list of relevant sites, pitched individually, with a reason for them to care.
- Assets worth linking to. Original data, a useful tool, or a reference page people return to.
- Digital PR. Commentary and expertise offered to journalists working on relevant stories.
- Guest contributions. On sites with genuine readership and editorial review, not submission queues.
- Fixing what you already have. Unlinked brand mentions and broken links pointing at your site are the cheapest links available.
It produces far fewer links. Those links come from pages with readers, which is the only kind that still counts.
Our link building service is built around that approach.
How to judge a link building offer
- Ask which sites, specifically. A refusal to name them usually means directories or a private network.
- Check whether those sites get organic traffic themselves. A site with none passes none.
- Be wary of a guaranteed quantity. Earned links cannot be guaranteed by volume.
- Ask what the anchor text will be. Exact-match keywords on every link is a footprint.
- Ask what happens if a link is removed later, and whether anyone will notice.

Why the Old Version Stopped Working
Article directories were built for one purpose: publish anything, hand out a link. Google spent years discounting them and now they pass essentially nothing.
The sites are still online and still sold in packages, usually described as high domain authority submissions. Domain authority is a third party score, not a Google metric, and it is trivially inflated.
If a site will publish anything from anyone with no editor involved, its links carry no weight. That is the whole test, and it disqualifies most of what is sold as article submission.
What We Do Instead
We build a target list of publications that genuinely cover your subject and have an audience of their own: trade press, regional business media, association sites, and established industry blogs.
Then we pitch an idea, not a finished article. Editors reject completed drafts and accept ideas that fit what they already publish, so the pitch comes first and the writing follows acceptance.
The article is written for that publication’s readers, with the link placed where it belongs in the argument rather than dropped into a byline nobody reads.

What Makes an Article Get Accepted
Editors accept pieces that say something their readers have not already read ten times. That usually means a position, a dataset, or firsthand experience.
They reject pieces that read as advertising. A single relevant link inside a genuinely useful article survives editing; three promotional mentions do not.
Turnaround also matters. Publications that accepted a pitch expect the draft when promised, and a writer who delivers on time gets asked back, which is how one placement becomes an ongoing column.
How Many Placements to Expect
Real placement is slow. A steady program produces a handful of accepted articles a month, not dozens, and the acceptance rate on cold pitches is never near a hundred percent.
That is the trade. Eight editorial placements on sites your customers actually read will move rankings more than four hundred directory submissions, and they will keep working.
They also produce something a link alone does not: referral traffic, and readers who already trust the publication that vouched for you.
Article Placement and Author Authority
Bylines accumulate. A consistent author profile across recognized publications is the clearest external evidence of expertise that a search engine or an AI answer tool can find.
That matters more each year as search leans on signals of who is behind the content, particularly in subjects where accuracy has consequences.
We link the byline back to a real author page on your site so the credential connects to the business rather than floating loose.
“He was flexible with his services rather than insisting on a one size fits all program.”

Where Articles Get Placed
| Placement type | Link value | Realistic difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Trade or industry publication | Highest, plus real readers | Hard, needs a genuine angle |
| Regional business press | High for local authority | Moderate, local angle helps |
| Established niche blog | Solid and relevant | Moderate |
| Generic guest post farm | Near zero, some risk | Easy, and not worth doing |
| Article directory | None | Trivial, avoid entirely |
When This Is Not the Right Tactic
If your own site has thin service pages or technical problems, links will not rescue it. Fix the foundation first.
If you need results within the quarter, this is not the channel. Pitch to publication commonly takes four to ten weeks.
And if nobody credible publishes in your field, we will say so and put the budget into digital PR or original research instead of manufacturing placements on sites that do not matter.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are article writing services?
Article writing services produce researched, publish-ready articles for your site or for placement on other publications. The work covers topic selection based on what people search, research, drafting, editing, and optimization so the finished piece can rank. Placement work adds the outreach: finding publications with real readers, pitching an editor, and revising to their standards before it runs.
Good article writing starts from a keyword and audience brief rather than from a title someone liked, because that is what decides whether the finished piece earns traffic.
Does article submission still work for SEO?
Article submission to bulk directories stopped working over a decade ago and can now harm a site, since those networks were the target of Google’s earliest link quality updates. What does still work is placement on genuine publications your audience reads, where the article stands on its own merit. The distinction is editorial judgment.
The distinction is whether the site would publish the piece if there were no link in it.
Who writes the articles?
Articles are written by writers briefed on your industry, your audience, and the specific search the piece is meant to capture, then edited before delivery. For technical or regulated subjects the draft is built from source material you provide or from an interview with someone on your team, because accuracy in those fields cannot be researched from secondary sources without risk.
How much do article writing services cost?
Article writing services are usually priced per piece. Rates across the market run from about $100 for a short general article to $1,000 or more for researched long-form with expert interviews. Placement is usually quoted separately from writing, because the outreach can take longer than the article did and success depends on an editor agreeing.
Technical, medical, and financial topics sit at the higher end because they require genuine expertise to write credibly. Word count, research depth, and whether distribution is included are the three things that change the number on a quote more than anything else.
What is article submission in SEO?
Article submission in SEO means writing an article and publishing it on a website other than your own, with a link pointing back to you. The original version relied on article directories that accepted anything, and Google devalued those years ago. The version that still works looks nothing like it: a real publication, a real editor, and an article people read.
The version that still works is editorial placement: pitching a real publication with its own readers and standards, then writing something their audience actually wants to read.
Do article submission sites still work for SEO?
Article submission sites no longer work for SEO in any meaningful way. Directories that publish every submission without an editor pass almost no value, and lists of “high DA article submission sites” rely on third party scores that Google does not use and that are easy to inflate. Treat those lists as a warning sign.
The simple test is whether a human editor could reject your piece. If not, the link is not worth having.
How is guest posting different from article submission?
Guest posting and article submission describe the same activity at different quality levels. Both mean publishing on someone else’s site for a link. The difference is the standard of the site accepting it. Guest posting usually implies a publication with an editor who can say no, while article submission carries the legacy of directories that accepted anything. We only pursue the first kind.
The difference is whether a real publication with real readers accepted the piece on merit, or whether a site that publishes anything took it automatically. We only pursue the first, because the second is what Google spent a decade learning to ignore.
How long does it take to get an article placed?
Getting an article placed usually takes four to ten weeks from first pitch to published piece. Editors take one to three weeks to respond, writing and revision take another week or two, and publication schedules add more. Rejections are normal, so a realistic program pitches several targets for every placement it expects to land.
Rankings move later still, since a link needs to be crawled and assessed. Anyone promising placements next week is using sites where nobody decides anything.
How many backlinks do I need from articles?
The number of backlinks you need from articles depends on what the pages ahead of you already have, not on a fixed target. We look at the link profiles of the sites currently ranking for your terms and work out the gap. That number is usually smaller than expected, and it is always specific to your market.
In most local and regional markets that gap is a handful of genuinely good links, not hundreds, which is why quality is the only lever worth pulling.
Can I write the articles myself?
You can write the articles yourself, and in specialist fields the result is often better because you have the firsthand experience an editor wants. What most business owners need help with is the other half: building the target list, pitching editors in a form they accept, and shaping the piece so the link sits naturally in the argument.
A split where you supply the expertise and we handle placement works well.
