SEO Pricing: Quick Answer
SEO pricing across the market runs from a few hundred dollars a month for a small local site to five figures for competitive national programs. What moves your number is the competition, how much of the site needs work, whether content and links are included, and how fast you want results.
SEO Pricing
SEO pricing across the market ranges from a few hundred dollars a month for a very small local site to five figures for competitive national programs. Agencies publish retainers from about $500 at the low end to $10,000 or more at the top, with most single-location local work between $1,500 and $5,000.
Published surveys put the range differently depending on who they poll. Ahrefs’ survey of 439 providers found agencies average $3,209 a month, while Backlinko’s survey of more than 300 professionals puts the blended average at $1,000 to $2,500.
The gap is provider mix. Ahrefs reports freelancers at $1,348 against agencies at $3,209, so a blended average always sits below an agency-only one.
What sets your number is how many pages need work, how strong the sites ahead of you are, and how much is done for you rather than by you.
We do not publish a rate card, because the same figure is generous for a five page local site and nowhere near enough for a national program. We look at your site first, then quote against the work it actually needs.

What a Program Actually Includes
Scope varies, but nearly every engagement moves through the same four areas. The mix shifts with what your site is missing, which is why the same monthly figure buys different work for different businesses.
Technical and on-page work
Crawling and indexing problems first, then page speed, then the titles, headings, structure and internal links that decide whether a page can rank at all. This is where the fastest wins usually sit, because the traffic is already being lost rather than not yet earned.
Content
Keyword and intent research, then the pages themselves: service pages that answer what buyers ask, city pages where location decides the result, and posts that capture the questions your service pages cannot rank for. Existing pages are usually rewritten before new ones are added.
Authority
Editorial links from publications that have their own readers, digital PR where you have something genuinely newsworthy, and original data worth citing. We do not buy links, use private networks, or submit to directories for their own sake.
Those tactics carry risk and no longer move rankings.
Local and reporting
Google Business Profile, the listings that matter in your industry, and a review process that keeps a steady flow rather than a burst. Reporting covers rankings for the terms that matter commercially, organic traffic to the pages that sell, and inquiries from search.

What Actually Changes the Price
| Factor | Pushes cost down | Pushes cost up |
|---|---|---|
| Competition for your terms | Local, few strong rivals | National, established competitors |
| Size of the site | A handful of pages | Hundreds of pages or many locations |
| Current state | Sound technically, decent content | Broken, penalized, or migrating |
| Content production | Your team writes | We research and write everything |
| Link building | Not needed yet | Needed to close an authority gap |
| Speed expected | Steady progress is fine | Results wanted inside a quarter |
How Link Building Is Priced
Link building costs more than any other part of a program because it cannot be automated without creating risk. What you are paying for is research, outreach, and the writing behind a pitch an editor will accept, not a quantity of links.
The honest number depends on the gap. We look at the link profiles of the sites currently ranking for your terms and work out what is missing.
In most local and regional markets that gap is a handful of genuinely good links rather than hundreds.
Be wary of anything priced purely per link. Volume pricing rewards producing links rather than moving rankings, and the cheapest links come from the places that stopped counting years ago.

Why Two Quotes for the Same Site Differ So Much
Two proposals for the same website can differ by a factor of five, and the gap is almost never about skill. It is about what sits behind the label.
One retainer might cover four hours a month of checking a dashboard. Another covers research, writing, development time, outreach and a person who answers the phone.
Both get called SEO.
The second driver is who does the work. A quote priced on offshore production hours will always undercut one where a senior person sets strategy, and the cheaper one often costs more once the work has to be redone.
The third is whether the provider looked at your site before quoting. A number produced from a template cannot know that your site has a crawling problem or three hundred thin pages.
When SEO Is the Wrong Spend
If your site converts badly, paying for more visitors to it makes the leak bigger. Fix the pages first with conversion rate optimization, then buy traffic.
If you need customers this month rather than this quarter, ads deliver and SEO does not. A realistic first result window is three to six months, and anyone promising faster is selling you something else.
And if the budget only stretches to a few hundred dollars a month against national competitors, the money buys activity rather than movement. Spend it on one city or one service line instead of the whole market.
What to Ask Before You Sign Anything
Ask what happens in the first ninety days, specifically. A provider who cannot answer without seeing your site is being honest; one who answers instantly with the same plan they give everyone is not.
Ask who does the work and who you speak to when something breaks. In a lot of agencies these are different people, and the person who sold you the contract is neither.
Ask how success is measured. Rankings for terms nobody searches are easy to deliver.
Inquiries from search are the number that matters, and it should be in the proposal.
Finally, ask what happens if you leave. You should own your site, your content, your Google Business Profile and your analytics.
If any of that sits in the agency’s account, that is a problem worth solving before you start rather than after.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does SEO cost per month?
SEO costs per month vary widely across the market. Agencies publish retainers from about $500 for a very small local site to $10,000 or more for competitive national programs, with most single-location local work between $1,500 and $5,000.
What sets your number is how many pages need work, how strong your competitors are, and whether content and links are included. What is actually included at each level is set out under our SEO services.
Why do SEO prices vary so much?
SEO prices vary because the work behind the label varies enormously. One provider’s retainer might cover monthly reporting and small fixes, while another’s includes content production, link outreach, and technical development.
Competition matters too, since ranking in a saturated metro takes far more work than in a small market. Ask any quote to itemize deliverables, which is the only way to compare proposals fairly.
For a lighter engagement than a full retainer, SEO consulting may fit better.
Is cheap SEO worth it?
Cheap SEO under a few hundred dollars a month rarely covers enough hours to move anything, and the tactics that fit that budget tend to be automated link building and spun content that can trigger penalties. Paying nothing is safer than paying for work that damages the site.
If budget is genuinely tight, a one-time optimization project delivers more than a thin ongoing retainer.
Do you offer contracts or month to month SEO?
Contracts in SEO commonly run six or twelve months, because results take that long to build and providers want to know they will still be engaged when the work matures. Month to month arrangements exist and offer flexibility, usually at a higher rate.
Either way, look for a clear exit clause and confirm you keep ownership of the content and accounts created on your behalf.
Why will you not publish your prices?
We do not publish prices because a number without context misleads people in both directions. The same monthly figure is generous for a five page local site and nowhere near enough for a competitive national program.
Quoting a rate card would mean either scaring off businesses we could help affordably, or setting an expectation we would have to walk back once we saw the site. We look first, then quote.
How long should I commit to SEO?
You should plan for at least six months before judging SEO, because that is roughly how long it takes for content and technical changes to be crawled, assessed, and reflected in rankings. Shorter commitments encourage tactics that look fast and cause problems later.
We work month to month rather than on long lock-ins, but we will say honestly at the start whether six months is realistic for your market.
What should I be suspicious of in an SEO quote?
Be suspicious of an SEO quote that guarantees rankings, promises a specific position by a date, or prices purely by the number of links or articles delivered. Nobody controls Google’s results, and volume-based pricing rewards producing things rather than moving numbers.
Also be wary of any proposal written before the provider looked at your site, since the work required cannot be known until then.
