60+ free tools I use on real client work, compiled into one list.
What Is Inside the 60+ Tool List
These are not our software. They are the free tools we open on real client work, grouped by the job you are doing, so you can find the right one without hunting.
- Keyword research. Find the terms worth targeting and the questions people actually type.
- On-page and content. Fix titles, meta descriptions, readability, and duplication before you publish.
- Backlinks and domains. See who links to you, who links to your competitors, and which links broke.
- Technical SEO and audits. Crawl the site, test speed and schema, and check what Google can actually reach.
- Rank tracking and competitors. Watch your real positions, and where a rival’s traffic comes from.
- Local SEO. Map rankings across a city, close citation gaps, and make reviews easy to leave.
- Analytics and extras. Traffic, tags, Bing, and the odd jobs that come up every month.

Who These Tools Are For
Business owners, marketers, and anyone running a small site who wants to see what is wrong before paying someone to fix it.
If you are running tens of thousands of URLs, or you need a full backlink profile rather than a sample, the free tiers will run out on you quickly.

Enhance Your Website’s Performance With Free SEO Tools
The right tool turns a guess into a number you can act on. At SEO Optimizers, we offer a range of free SEO tools designed to help you boost your website’s performance. These tools are essential for anyone looking to improve their site’s visibility and ranking on search engines. If podcast interviews are how you want to earn that visibility, we keep a separate list of podcast guesting tools.
Why Free SEO Tools Are Worth Using
Free SEO tools are invaluable for businesses of all sizes. They provide insights and data that can help you optimize your website effectively without the need for costly software. A free tool will show you symptoms; auditing the whole site is what tells you which of them matter. We put the list together so clients could do the basic checks themselves between reports.
What Free Tools Cover, and Where They Stop
What you get for nothing
Keyword volume, on-page checks, crawl errors, speed scores, a backlink sample and local rankings. On a site under a few hundred pages that covers most of the diagnostic work, with no card and no trial clock.
Where the free tiers stop
Crawlers cut off after a few hundred URLs. Backlink checkers show a sample rather than the full profile. Rank checkers pull one location at a time, and historical data is usually short or missing.
Who they are built for
Search Console, PageSpeed Insights and Google Business Profile are written for business owners and explain their own results. Screaming Frog and the schema validators assume you already know what you are looking at, so leave those until last.
What Each Group of Tools Does
The same seven groups again, this time with the specific tools we reach for first and what each one is good at.
Keyword Research
Google Keyword Planner for volume from Google’s own data. Ubersuggest and Keyword Sheeter for idea volume. AnswerThePublic and Answer Socrates for the questions people type. Google Trends for seasonality, and Keyword Surfer for numbers while you browse.
If you would rather have it done for you, that is our keyword research service.
On-Page and Content
Google Search Console for how pages already perform. Rank Math or Yoast for meta tags inside WordPress. Hemingway Editor for readability, Siteliner for duplicate content, and Duplichecker before anything gets published.
Backlinks
Ahrefs Free Backlink Checker and Moz Link Explorer for your profile. OpenLinkProfiler for a deeper free sample. The Ahrefs Broken Link Checker for finding dead pages worth reclaiming, and Hunter.io for the contact address once you have a target.
Technical SEO and Audits
Screaming Frog crawls up to 500 URLs free. PageSpeed Insights, GTmetrix, and Pingdom for speed. The Rich Results Test for schema, Ahrefs Webmaster Tools for a free site audit, and a robots.txt tester before you change a crawl rule.
Rank Tracking and Competitors
The Search Console performance report for your real positions and click-through rate. WhatsMySERP and SERProbot for spot checks. SimilarWeb for where a competitor’s traffic comes from, and Uptime Robot so downtime does not cost you rankings.
Local SEO
Google Business Profile first. Local Falcon to see rankings across a map instead of one point. Whitespark for citation gaps, and a review link generator so customers land straight on the review box. Local work has its own playbook, which is our local SEO service.
“Brandon at SEO Optimizers is extremely knowledgeable and a true expert when it comes to SEO. He made the process simple and easy to understand, and his strategies really helped us optimize our online presence.”

How to Use Free SEO Tools Effectively
Integrate with Your SEO Strategy
A tool you open once tells you nothing. Check Search Console weekly, crawl the site after any big change, and compare the numbers to last month rather than to zero.
Stay Updated with SEO Trends
Search changes constantly, and so do the tools. Check what a tool actually does today before you rely on it, because free tiers get cut and features get retired.
Combine Tools for Comprehensive Analysis
Each tool sees a different slice. By combining the data from multiple tools, you can get a comprehensive understanding of your website’s SEO performance. If you also run paid search, we keep the same kind of list for free PPC tools. This holistic approach allows you to address all aspects of SEO effectively.
When You Need More Than a Free Tool
At SEO Optimizers, we are committed to helping our clients succeed in the digital world. This list is one way we help businesses that are not ready to hire anyone yet. By providing these resources, we aim to make SEO accessible to everyone, regardless of their budget or technical expertise.
Ongoing Support and Resources
Alongside the tool list, we publish guides and run a free SEO class, and our team answers questions about your own site.
Customized SEO Solutions
Every business is unique, and so are its SEO needs. We offer customized SEO solutions that align with your business objectives. Whether you are looking to improve your local SEO, take on ecommerce search optimization, or increase your organic traffic, SEO Optimizers has the expertise to help you succeed.
“Very knowledgeable and an excellent teacher! Highly recommended!”

How to Use These Tools Together
Free tools will not do the work for you, but they will show you where the work is. Run them in this order and each one narrows what the next has to look at.

1. Start in Search Console
Open the performance report and sort by impressions. Pages getting seen but not clicked have a title problem. Queries ranking on page two have a content problem. This tells you where to spend the rest of the afternoon.
2. Size up the keyword
Take those queries into Keyword Planner for volume, and Keyword Surfer to see the numbers while you browse the results. Check who is already ranking before you commit to a term.
3. Crawl the site
Screaming Frog crawls up to 500 URLs on the free tier, which covers most small sites. It finds the missing titles, the duplicate meta descriptions, the broken links, and the pages with no internal links pointing at them.
For a single page rather than a whole crawl, our SEO Chrome extension reports the same fields in one click.
4. Check speed on the pages that matter
Run your top landing pages through PageSpeed Insights and GTmetrix. Fix the pages that earn money first, not the ones with the worst score.
5. Handle local separately
If you serve an area, Google Business Profile does more for you than anything on the rest of this list. Local Falcon shows how your rankings change across a map instead of at one address.
What free tools cannot do is connect a ranking drop to the change that caused it. That is the judgment part, and it is the reason audits still need a person.
You Have the Tools. Here Is the System.
A tool shows you a number. It does not tell you which number matters this month, or what to do with the answer. That gap is where most DIY SEO stalls.
The ChatGPT SEO Starter Kit closes it: a 1-hour training video, 5 custom GPTs for on-page SEO, blog outlines, keyword clusters, local posts and content writing, a prompt and workflow cheat sheet, and templates that turn an AI answer into a page you can publish.
$37 one time, regular $197. Instant access, lifetime updates, and a 7-day money-back guarantee.

Who Put This Together
I am Brandon Leibowitz, and I have run SEO Optimizers since 2007. I have been booked on dozens of podcasts as a guest, and I wrote The Power of Guest Podcasting about how to do it as a repeatable system rather than a lucky break. I will sign a copy and mail it to you, and you only cover $8.95 shipping.
Free tools report symptoms. They will show a ranking drop, a slow page, a thin title. What none of them do is connect the drop to the change that caused it, or tell you which of forty findings is the one costing you money. That judgment is the whole job, and it is what we do for clients every day.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best free SEO tool?
The best free SEO tool is Google Search Console, because its data comes from Google rather than an estimate. It shows the queries you already rank for, your average position and click-through rate, indexing problems, and any manual action against the site. Everything else on this list supplements it. If you only ever open one free tool, open that one, and check it weekly.
Does Google have a free SEO tool?
Google has several free SEO tools, and they are the most reliable ones here. Search Console reports impressions, clicks, positions, and indexing. PageSpeed Insights measures Core Web Vitals. Keyword Planner gives search volume ranges inside a Google Ads account. The Rich Results Test checks structured data, and Google Business Profile covers the local side. All of them are free with a Google account.
Can I do SEO for free?
You can do SEO for free, and the tools on this list cover most of what a small site needs. Free tiers do cap what you see: crawlers stop after a few hundred URLs, backlink checkers show a sample rather than the full profile, and rank checkers pull one location at a time. What they cannot do is connect a traffic drop to the change that caused it.
What are the 5 best SEO tools?
The five best free SEO tools for most sites are Google Search Console for real performance data, PageSpeed Insights for load time, Screaming Frog for crawling up to 500 URLs, Ahrefs Webmaster Tools for a free audit and backlink data, and Google Business Profile if you serve a local area. Those five cover research, technical checks, links, and local before anything paid is worth buying.
Can ChatGPT do an SEO audit?
ChatGPT cannot do an SEO audit on its own, because it cannot crawl your site or see your rankings. It can read a crawl export, a Search Console download, or page code you paste in, and it is good at grouping those findings and explaining what they mean. Run the crawl with a real tool first, then use AI to sort what it found.
Can I do SEO on my own?
You can do SEO on your own, especially the first round of it. Fix your titles and meta descriptions, get every page indexed, speed the site up, and answer the questions customers ask. That work takes attention more than expertise. Where people stall is links, competitive markets, and deciding which of fifty problems matters this month. That is usually where hiring help pays for itself.
