Web Design and Development: Quick Answer
Web design and development builds a site with search planned in from the first page rather than added after launch. The structure comes out of keyword research, speed is a budget decision agreed up front, and your team can still edit the site after handover.
Web Design and Development That Starts With Search
The single decision that matters most is whether search is planned into the build or bolted on afterwards, because retrofitting usually means redoing pages that were already signed off and paid for.
We have built and rebuilt sites since 2007, and the pattern has not changed. The expensive redesigns are the ones where SEO arrived last.
What Gets Built Into the Site
A build that is ready for search is not a design decision made at the end. It is a set of choices made before the first page is drawn.
Structure Before Styling
We map the pages to what people actually search for before anyone picks a color or a font. That comes out of keyword research rather than a sitemap drawn from your org chart.
The result is one page per thing a customer wants, rather than a single services page that tries to rank for nine different terms and ranks for none.
Speed as a Constraint, Not a Cleanup Task
Core Web Vitals are a genuine ranking input, and they are far cheaper to design for than to fix later. That means budgets for image weight and third-party scripts agreed up front.
Most slow sites we inherit are not slow because of the code. They are slow because six tracking scripts and a slider were added after launch with nobody accountable for the total.
Markup Search Engines Can Read
Clean, semantic HTML, one H1 per page, headings in order, and schema for the things you actually are: a local business, a service, a product, an FAQ.
This is where the old “W3C validated” pitch used to live. Validation is fine, but it has not been a ranking factor for well over a decade, and we will not sell it as one.
Analytics From Day One
Tracking configured before launch, not three months later once someone asks how the site is doing. See website analytics.

Platforms We Build On
The platform matters less than most agencies pretend, but it does decide who can update the site afterwards and what it costs to run.
| Platform | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress | Content-led sites that need to grow, and full control of markup | Plugin bloat is the main cause of slow WordPress sites |
| Shopify | Product catalogs and checkout you do not want to maintain | URL structure is rigid, so plan collections carefully. See ecommerce SEO |
| Webflow | Design-led marketing sites with a small page count | Editing needs more training than WordPress for non-technical staff |
| Squarespace | Very small sites where speed of launch beats flexibility | Limited technical SEO control as the site grows |
We recommend the one that fits who maintains the site after we hand it over. A platform your team cannot edit is a platform that goes stale.

Redesigns: How Not to Lose Your Rankings
A redesign is the single most common way an established site loses traffic overnight, and it is almost always avoidable.
The damage comes from changed URLs with no redirects, content quietly dropped because it did not fit the new design, and staging sites left open to indexing.
Before anything launches we crawl the current site, record what ranks and what earns links, and map every old URL to a new one. Pages that earn traffic keep their content, even when the new design would prefer less text.
After launch we watch coverage and rankings for the first month, because a redirect chain missed on launch day is cheap to fix in week one and expensive in month six. See our website audit.
Web Design and Development Pricing
Pricing depends on page count and how much of the content has to be written from scratch, which is usually the part that runs over.
Our SEO pricing page covers that side.

Agency Build vs Template vs Freelancer
All three produce a working website. They differ in what happens after launch.
| DIY template | Freelancer | Us | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | |||
| Search built in | Rarely, the theme decides your structure | Depends entirely on the individual | Structure comes from keyword research first |
| Redesign migration | No redirect mapping, so rankings usually drop | Sometimes | Full redirect map and content audit before launch |
| Speed | Theme and plugin bloat is the usual outcome | Varies | Budgeted for at design stage |
| After launch | You are on your own | Often unreachable once paid | Thirty days of monitoring, then optional ongoing SEO |
| Best when | Pre-revenue, testing an idea | A simple site and a developer you trust | The site has to generate leads, or has rankings to protect |
If you are pre-revenue and testing an idea, use a template. We will say so rather than sell you a build.
When a New Website Is the Wrong Spend
Sometimes the honest answer is that your site is not the problem.
If the current site converts and simply does not get found, the money is better spent on content and links than on a rebuild that resets whatever authority you already have.
If the site is under two years old and structurally sound, a targeted fix to speed, structure and page content usually beats a full rebuild at a fraction of the cost.
We will tell you which of the three situations you are in before quoting. A rebuild we talk you out of costs us a project and saves you a year.
How the Build Runs
- Discovery and keyword mapping. What people search, what your competitors rank for, what pages the site needs.
- Structure and wireframes. Page-by-page outline signed off before design starts.
- Design. Templates rather than one-off pages, so the site stays consistent as it grows.
- Build and content. Pages built, copy written or migrated, schema and tracking added.
- Pre-launch checks. Redirect map, speed pass, mobile pass, staging locked from indexing.
- Launch and watch. Thirty days of monitoring coverage, rankings and errors.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does web design and development cost?
Web design and development is quoted per project, because page count and content are what drive it. The variable that moves the number most is how many pages need original copy written rather than migrated, since writing is usually the longest part of the build.
After that it is the platform, whether ecommerce and payments are involved, and whether an existing site has rankings that need protecting through a redirect map. Send us the current site through a free website analysis and we will scope it properly.
How long does a website take to build?
A website takes six to twelve weeks for most business sites. Discovery and structure take one to two weeks, design two to three, build and content three to five, and pre-launch checks one.
Projects that overrun almost always do so waiting on content and approvals rather than on development. Having your copy, images and logins ready before the build starts is the single biggest thing you control.
Will a redesign hurt my search rankings?
A redesign hurts rankings when URLs change without redirects, when content that earned rankings is cut for design reasons, or when the staging site gets indexed. Done with a full redirect map and a content audit beforehand, a redesign should hold rankings and usually improves them through better speed and structure.
Do I need a new website to improve my SEO?
Usually not, most clients do not need a new website to improve SEO. If your site converts visitors and is under a few years old, targeted fixes to speed, structure and page content cost far less than a rebuild and carry none of the migration risk.
A rebuild is worth it when the platform blocks technical changes or the structure cannot support the pages you need.
Who owns the website when it is finished?
You own the website when it is finished, including the domain, the hosting account and the files. We build on platforms you can hand to another developer without penalty, and we will not hold a site hostage through a proprietary system only we can edit.
That matters more than it sounds: the most common reason businesses stay with a bad agency is that leaving means rebuilding.
What is SEO in web design?
SEO in web design means building the site so search engines can read it, rather than optimizing it after launch. In practice that is the page structure coming out of keyword research, clean semantic markup, speed budgeted for at design stage, and schema for what the business actually is.
Retrofitting these onto a finished site costs more, because it usually means redoing pages that were already signed off. See on page SEO.
Is it worth paying for a website built around SEO?
Paying for a website built around SEO is worth it when you expect the site to bring in customers rather than just exist. A template site is fine for testing an idea.
Once search is a real channel, the structure decides what you can rank for, and structure is the one thing that is expensive to change later. If your current site converts and simply is not found, fix that instead of rebuilding.
